Dhaka’s air pollution a ‘matter of shame’ for Bangladesh: PM

News Desk: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has expressed deep concern over the alarming levels of air pollution in Dhaka, labeling it a source of national shame. For years, the capital has consistently ranked among the world’s most polluted cities, a situation that calls for immediate action and collective responsibility.

During a recent meeting focused on the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, the Prime Minister emphasized the need for a united effort to combat environmental degradation. He urged individuals in positions of authority to go beyond their official duties and actively contribute to improving the air quality and overall environment for future generations.

Rahman highlighted the importance of public awareness in environmental conservation, encouraging government officials to initiate projects that foster green spaces. He pointed out that access to nature is limited for many citizens and called for the development of rooftop gardens, school gardens, and other green initiatives.

The meeting also set ambitious goals, including the identification and preservation of the country’s mother trees within six months and a commitment to plant 250 million trees. The Prime Minister reiterated that if these initiatives are executed effectively, they would benefit the entire population.

In a collaborative spirit, the meeting concluded with plans for the environment ministry to step in and compensate for any shortfalls in tree-planting targets set by other ministries, ensuring that regular care and monitoring of planted trees are prioritized.

With the participation of key officials, including Environment Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo and State Minister Sheikh Faridul Islam, the meeting underscored the urgent need for action to safeguard the environment for the well-being of current and future generations.
