Sports Desk: The debate over who is the better footballer—Messi or Ronaldo—has persisted for years. Ronaldo’s emotional farewell message following his final international appearance has brought this debate back into the spotlight.
The tug-of-war between the fans of 39-year-old Lionel Messi and 41-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo over who truly deserves the title of the “Greatest of All Time” (GOAT) is set to continue for a long time to come.
Messi recently hung up his national team jersey, and on Thursday (November 5), Cristiano Ronaldo announced his retirement from international football.
However, both players remain active in club football. Not long ago, Ronaldo demonstrated his enduring prowess by finding the back of the net five times in a single match. While two of those goals were disallowed, the remaining three formed a perfect hat-trick—scored with his right foot, a header, and his left foot.
Since both Messi and Ronaldo are still active, the debate remains very much alive.
In terms of total goals, Ronaldo leads the way. Across his club and international career, he has scored 985 goals, with the 1,000-goal milestone now just a matter of time. Messi, meanwhile, has 936 goals to his name.
For their respective national teams, Ronaldo has scored 146 goals, compared to Messi’s 126.
Ronaldo also stands as the all-time top scorer in the UEFA Champions League and has won the title five times, while Messi has won it four times.
Yet, football is about more than just goals. Messi holds the edge in terms of scoring frequency, averaging approximately 0.79 goals per match, compared to Ronaldo’s 0.73.
The gap widens further when it comes to creating goals; Messi is significantly ahead of Ronaldo in assists. Through his dribbling, key passes, and playmaking ability, he functions as both a forward and a playmaker.
The picture is equally clear regarding individual accolades: Messi has won eight Ballon d’Or awards, while Ronaldo has won five. Messi also holds the record for the most goals scored in a single calendar year—91 goals in 2012.
With his success on the international stage, Messi has brought a fitting conclusion to what was once an unfinished chapter in his career. He won the World Cup in 2022, alongside the 2021 and 2024 Copa América titles. Ronaldo’s trophy cabinet includes the 2016 Euro title and two UEFA Nations League trophies; however, the golden World Cup trophy has remained beyond his reach.
In truth, their respective strengths lie in entirely different areas. Ronaldo’s greatest assets are his explosive pace, consistency, physical conditioning, and an insatiable hunger for goals. ‘CR7’ has proven his mettle across leagues in four different countries: England, Spain, Italy, and Saudi Arabia. Messi, by contrast, is like a poet on the pitch—unrivaled in his ability to conjure magic with the ball at his feet. He not only scores goals himself but also creates them for his teammates; his mere presence on the field can shift the entire tempo of a match.
Ultimately, the answer depends on the criteria used. If the benchmarks are goals, records, and sustained excellence at the highest level over a long period, then Ronaldo stands alone. If, however, the criteria are versatility, individual accolades, and success on the grandest stages, then the advantage shifts to Messi. By the numbers, both belong firmly among the greatest of all time.
