Crime Desk: Police have stated that Ishayat Shahriar Oprotim (13)—son of Dr. Nahida Begum, an associate professor in the Department of Bangla at Comilla University (CoU)—was killed during an attempt to snatch his iPhone.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Md. Anisuzzaman disclosed this information at the District SP’s office around 2:15 PM on Sunday, September 20.
Three individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident so far: Saiful Islam Tuhin (19), Mozammel Hossain Fahad, and Md. Kamrul Hasan. Among them, Fahad is a minor.
Additionally, another individual named Siam (19) has been detained; police are currently verifying the information and evidence gathered against him.
According to the police, a review of CCTV footage revealed that on September 18, around 3:15 PM, Tuhin took Oprotim to a secluded, forest-covered area near Sananda in the Lalmai Hills.
Following the recovery of Oprotim’s body, police took Tuhin into custody. During interrogation, Tuhin admitted to taking Oprotim to the location with the intention of snatching his mobile phone.
Police further stated that, based on information provided by Tuhin, Fahad was taken into custody. During questioning, Fahad revealed the involvement of his friend Kamrul, who was subsequently detained by the police.
Acting on information provided by Tuhin, police conducted a raid on his residence and recovered the mobile phone used by Oprotim.
Preliminary police investigations revealed that the attempt to snatch Oprotim’s phone took place in the secluded forest area of Sananda between 5:00 PM and 6:00 PM on September 18. When Oprotim resisted, a scuffle ensued. At one point, Tuhin—followed by Fahad and Kamrul—struck Oprotim on the head with bamboo sticks, resulting in his death.
Police also learned that after confirming Oprotim’s death, Tuhin took the mobile phone and left the scene with Fahad and Kamrul.
The Superintendent of Police stated that a murder case has been filed against the three arrested individuals. It is also being investigated whether anyone else is involved in the incident. He stated that the police report would be submitted to the court promptly upon the conclusion of the investigation.
